Engaging people and challenging expectations.
Evolving from the work on the Community Chair for Community For Opportunity, this collection of furniture pieces for residential use seeks to require more of the maker than simple assembly of pre-made components.
Inspired by Enzo Mari and the Ishinomaki Laboratory, their construction is restricted to dimensional lumber (standard sized lumber, readily available requiring very few resources and limited cutting) and readily available fasteners all with goal of being producible with an unconventional skillset.
The furniture pieces work to embody a design circularity in that their neutral functionality enables them to be used in different ways. The pieces can also be repaired if broken and the use of natural materials and finishes enables a clear end of use-life strategy.
The collection represents the potential of simple manufacture, and simple materials. They invite engagement in use as well as in repair and honest use of fasteners and intuitive structures that result in a character that is familiar and not opaque.
